stevem49 Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 The 9th SF War Diaries have either O.G.I. or O.G.1 for Jan 1917 Does anyone know of an O.G. I or 1 across from Battery Valley (St Pierre-Divion). Whatever the place was they thought the enemy was there. Any help would be much appreciated. stevem

Paul Reed Posted 22 November , 2006 Share Posted 22 November , 2006 OG normally stood for Old German [Line]. The main and most famours OGs on the Somme were OG 1 and OG 2 at Pozieres. However, I have seen the German linea around Thiepval and Grandcourt referred to as 'OG' in some war diaries. There may have been other uses of OG; indeed, I have seen it occasionally referring to German positions at Bullecourt in 1917.

It was just in front of Grandcourt so fits with other diaries. It was very cold and snowing when he wrote it! stevem
AndyMacdonald Posted 23 November , 2006 Share Posted 23 November , 2006 Paul's info on OG 1 is bang on. YOu can get sketch maps of OG1 (and OG2) via CEW Bean's official history of Australia at WW1, the 1916 volume. It's available on line at the AUstralian War Memorial.
