Jimmy Taylor's book has Gibbons 9329 as one of five KIAs on 24 Oct 1914. Interestingly, he is KIA on same date as Joe Richardson, one of the 'boys' from my home town. (see Ballymena website below 1914 section).

The KIAS for the next few days are HORRENDOUS.

This is what contemporary accounts say:-

Enemy commenced severe bombardment of Neueve Chapelle with their heavy guns at La Bassee. Soon after dark a determined attack was made in considerable strength but was repulsed with heavy casulaties.

Falls: It was a wild evening of volleys fired at the flahses of the enemy's fire or at dim figures ... men meeting with shouts and oaths on the wet , slippery ground thrusting at one another with bayonets. For an hour the affair was doubtful then gradually the enemy was shaken off and 6pm the attack was definitely repulsed. It has been a fine example of obstinacy and courage.

General Smith Dorrien, Corps Commander made special mention of the 2nd Rifles - compliments them on their 'splendid feat and directs that all battalions of the Corps shall be informed of the circumstances and of his high appreciation of the gallantry displayed.'

Hope thuis helps

Thanks Des for the information,it has been very helpful.I was wondering if you or anybody else had any other ideas about the London Irish connection or do you think CGWC made a mistake in the transcription as they also had the wrong surname.

Best Regards,

Murrough.

Out of my league Murrough! Commemoration issues are the province the highly informative Terry Denham ... try a PM to him for CWGC issues.

Best wishes with your search.

Thanks to Terry Denham this matter has now been resolved.Terry was able to confirm PJ Gibbons belonged to the 2 Batt. Royal Irish Rifles and that his surname was Gibbons not Gibbon. The details have now been changed at CGWC website.Once again thnk you Terry.

Best Regards,

Murrough.
