Steven Broomfield Posted 20 November , 2006 Share Posted 20 November , 2006 Overseas service - one per year overseas, I believe. Others know more and will no doubt tell you! More interestingly, what unit was hewith? He and his chums have a dark-coloured strip on the uper arm, which I presume is a unit identification, and your granddad has an arm band (brassard?) of soem sort. Armoured Farmer Posted 20 November , 2006 Share Posted 20 November , 2006 Hello, As Steven says, they are overseas service stripes. One stripe indicates service abroad during one year, two stripes indicating service abroad in two years. Theoretically service on the 31st Dec 1917 and 1st Jan 1918 entitles the man to wear two stripes. They were light blue for years 1915 to 1919. If a man served overseas in 1914 he wore a red stripe on the bottom. They were introduced on 1st January 1918, so help to date photographs.
