Does anyone know where I can obtain a very comprehensive if not exhaustive list(s) of ALL recipients of the MONS STAR?

Tx,

John

OOPS! I hope I am NOT awarded by the moderators field punishment NO. 1 for forgetting to specify ONLY Canadian or CEF members awarded this. I believe that there is an older book put out in the 1960s to 1980s just on the Star and listing the recipients.

Hi John,

I don't recall a book on Canadian Mons Star recipients. A book was done on the members of the First Contingent, and it includes the nominal roll for No.2 Stationary Hospital, the only CEF unit to earn the 1914 star.

I have a special interest as I am happy to have a 1914 star trio to an enlisted man in this outfit. CEF 14 star trios are very difficult to find. I have two friends who also have trios in their collections.

Total number awarded is about 160; some 138 to No.2 Hospital; another 20 to Canadian nurses on duty in various BEF hospitals. To this could be added an unknown number awarded to Canadians serving in the British army. At least one battalion CO is included in this number.

Very interesting stuff. I was wondering if the number of 14 stars quoted counts all those Canadians entitled, or just the Hospital staff? During the data collation for the A.I.F Project, it was found that there were only 15 Australians who got the Mons Star, 4 of whom also were issued the bar. Two of them were co-opted nco's on loan from the Australian army who were on a Physical instructors course. Most interesting.

I think I am recalling David Ascoli's book on the Mons Star(?). Also I think some Canadian Engineers received this again being in the right place (if you can call going into a world war the right place!) as well as the hospital and the nurses seconded to British hospitals. There might be a few infantry as well. I suspect the infantry and engineers simply were in England in 1914,requested permission to go with the BEF and this was readily granted by a young colonial country eager to demonstrate motherland love and love of "king and empire".

Thanks for the information. Hopefully it should not be too hard to put together a pretty accurate list of the under 200 Canadians who got his award.

I have the Ascoli book, but there is no mention of Canadians in it. Regarding the Canadian infantry or engineers who qualified, I know of two CE men who were on couse or attachment in the UK in 1914 and accompanied their British unit to France.

357 Sgt.Maj.Charles Shergold (attached 1 Sig.Coy.,RE) won the DCM and was MID in 1914, and the MC in 1915. He ended up a lieutenant-colonel. 20758 L/Cpl.R.G.Shearle was also attached to the same unit, and won the DCM in Sept.,1914.

There may have been others, but basically, the Canadian numbers are: 138 to No.2 Stationary Hospital; 20 to other nurses; two to the above mentioned engineers= 160. To this can be added the unknown number of Canadian-born members of the British army who qualified, such as Lt.Col.E.O.Smith,Northamptonshire Regt. (who received the CMG for his services in 1914).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Terry

For a list of Nursing Sisters, NCOs and Men of 2nd Stationary Hospital who have received the Mons Star, see

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02015202_e.html:

I discovered this only a couple of minutes ago when reading the thread on Harrods refusing entry to an officer in uniform; another Pal referred to Harrods supplying Canadians in 1914-15 and the diary of the matron of the 2nd General Hospital, which prompted me to search the Canadian war diaries online, where I noticed the above.

PS Oops, not quite what I thought, see post number 9 below. Sorry

Moonraker,

the link that you provided just brings you to the LAC page. Could you re-do the link and/or give us the date to look for?

Thanks

Sorry. The Canadian archives seems to have been rejigged since my last visit, and I'm having my usual trouble getting to grips with anything new. Also, I only explored a couple of the hits from my search, which led to war diaries being available on line, but having checked it's seems that the Mons Star item is only a photograph and is not available on line:
