Ir0n Cr0ss Posted 19 November , 2006 Share Posted 19 November , 2006 Is it still there? The one from the Escadrille (?) Squadron. Probolly not. But does anyone have any pictures?
CROONAERT Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 Which Escadrille , and when I.C.? A number of airfields from WW1 still exist in various guises, but we'll need to know which one you mean to be able to help. I take it you're looking for a French airfield, but where and from what time period do you mean? (Squadrons ("escadrilles") moved around just like any other unit). bob lembke Posted 28 November , 2006 Share Posted 28 November , 2006 Anyone know of a German fighter airfield at Stenay-sur-Meuse, the German HQ town of the Fifth Army, a bit north of Verdun? It figured in my father's experiences there in the second half of 1916 and during 1917. I thought this thread might attract someone who knows of it. Christina Holstein Posted 29 November , 2006 Share Posted 29 November , 2006 Any airfield in Verdun itself was French. I don't know particularly of the German airfield at Stenay in WWI but there is no airfield at Stenay today. Have you got a contemporary map? If so, I can tell you what's on the ground now. bob lembke Posted 3 December , 2006 Share Posted 3 December , 2006 Christina; Are you familiar with present-day Stenay? I would like to go there sometime, after more study. It would be great if my father's old barracks are still there, but I doubt it, as Pop said that it was an old wooden French barracks. I have a partial picture of the courtyard of the structure. Is there a local historical society? I wounder how they would respond to Hunnish inquiries. With the spousal unit's assistance, I could write in French. Christina Holstein Posted 23 September , 2007 Share Posted 23 September , 2007 Hi Bob, Can't think how I didn't manage to answer this one last December! You could write to the mayor of Stenay to ask about a local history society or you could contact Pierre Lenhard at http://www.verdun-decouverte.fr/ Pierre speaks fluent German and is a great friend to German historians interested in the area. You can tell him I sent you. I'd be surprised if he wasn't able to help you. Christina

Bob Lembke Maybe you could try and ask on the French Forum, Pages 14-18. They have a section in English: http://pages14-18.mesdiscussions.net/pages...ste_sujet-1.htm They also link with some German and they are very friendly and will try and help you, no doubt.
