Guest cedars Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 I am searching for any information about my Grandfather, Howard Naden of Grosvenor Rd, Liverpool. He left his wife after WW1 so nothing was ever said about him by the family. There are no records in the National Archive beyond the medal card. This shows that as well as the general war medals he received the Silver War Badge. I understand that he was the only soldier with this name, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery and he survived the war. Most of my soldier ancestors seem to have served with the Kings Liverpool and I wonder why Howard ended up in the RGA. Any information would be most welcome. essdee Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 Cedars From his service number its possible to say where he enlisted but this doesn't tell you which battery he may have served with only a number of possibilities. However, doodling about on the NA website I came across this BT 372/1474/98 R557530 NADEN H 10/10/1934 LIVERPOOL 1913-1972 The BT 372 series is the Merchant Navy records. The R557530 number is the seamans service number followed by the date of discharge from the Merchant Navy. These cards usually have a photo attached together with finger prints and next of kin detail. This was a folded green card the seamen carried on them at all times. Not exactly what you were asking but it may turn out to be something interesting. Stuart
Guest cedars Posted 20 November , 2006 Share Posted 20 November , 2006 Dear Stuart, Thank you for the information. Howard Naden's RGA number was 114261. Have you any advice as to how I could use this number to get more information about his service? As far as your merchant seaman comments are concerned, I did say that I was led to believe that there was only one Howard Naden who served in WW1 (although doubtless there were a number with the initial H) and I was minded to discard this man. However during his life with his first wife and the early days with his second lady he seemed to father a child (he had at least a dozen) every 12 to 18 months with amazing consistency. However there was then a 'childless' gap of some years and this could be the by-product of absence at sea. I will certainly look at the NA records next time I can get there. Thanks again for your thoughts. Peter
essdee Posted 21 November , 2006 Share Posted 21 November , 2006 Peter A forum member Kondoa has produced an excellent list of service numbers allocated to the various Artillery Brigades/batteries. I can't find the link to it at the moment. However, if we suppose serial nos 114... were from Liverpool RGA, Pembroke nos start 371... for instance, then you have the following problem. 193, 204, 232, 279 & 314 siege batteries were formed at Liverpool. 170, 235, 297 & 437 Siege were formed at Mersey 393 & 401 siege were raised from Crosby battery, Liverpool 348 & 358 were formed at Crosby So you see there are a number of possibilities and this does not include Heavy Batteries. nadend Posted 15 July , 2008 Share Posted 15 July , 2008 I am searching for any information about my Grandfather, Howard Naden of Grosvenor Rd, Liverpool. He left his wife after WW1 so nothing was ever said about him by the family... Any information would be most welcome. Hi, I've been researching the Naden/Nadin/Neden/Nedin family names for some years now. Howard as a first name is very uncommon in the family. With that in mind, Howard's... Birth may have been registered in Aston (Birmingham) Jul-Sep 1879. Marriage may have been registered Oct-Dec 1900, married Mary Alice Hughes at All Saints, Toxteth Park. Death may have been registered Jul-Sep 1944 in Birmingham, although the age 58 suggests he was born 1885/86, so somat' is wrong! I hope this information is of some use.
