walrus Posted 16 November , 2006 Share Posted 16 November , 2006 I will remain polite and merely suggest that the perpetrators of this act deserve flogging (I'd suggest a dozen lashes at every War memorial in the county)

SilverSoldier Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 Lowlife's such as they that perpetuated this unspeakable act have no conscience, or respect for the sacred memorial to the fallen they have desecrated. They respect nothing and no one. I have only feelings of anger and rage towards such as they. Walrus / Andy, may I follow close behind you to administer the Salt salve? Terry. Guest KevinEndon Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 Congratulations to a local sculptor who is going to replace this memorial free of charge, a medal for their efforts. So sad to see that theives will stop at nothing to raise some cash, not only have they taken this bronze monument to smelt down so other, perhaps the same band of crooks plunged part of the West Midlands into darkness by stealing copper earthing cables from a power station. Shame they didn't get blown to bits.
Kookaburra Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 Absolutely unreal!! Surely someone heard or saw something, that was no 5 minute job. Hopefully the scum will be caught and severely dealt to. Cheers, Diane

Shame they didn't get blown to bits. I have friends in Nuneaton and as such have visited Nuneaton many times, I have seen this statue many times and have always thought what a wonderful piece of sculpture it is and a fitting memorial to boot. Watching Midlands Today who covered the story, it's thought that it may have been taken for it's scrap value which is believed to be about £6000.00. What a sad, sad, sad, reflection of society today and so close to rememberance Sunday as well. A rememberance Sunday during which we lost four more brave men and women serving their country. While someone/persons back home are stealing a war memorial to those who have gone before them, for it's "scrap value". You couldn't get a more stark contrast than that. Next time I am in Nuneaton I will be buying the sculptor concerned who is making the replacement several pints of beer. Stephen

The sculptor and his partner will be making a small scale mock up that will go on display for the local community to comment on, before he makes any changes, and then the full size version, which he said will be in hollow bronze.
