sjustice Posted 15 November , 2006 Share Posted 15 November , 2006 Hello all, I'm looking to find out which units from the Devonshires were in action on 12th October 1916. My Grandfather-in-law was a Pte in the Glosters but we know that he was reported wounded on 13th October while attached to the Devons, hence the enquiry. Perhaps someone here can put me right but I'm asking about the 12th as I believe the British armies were involved in offensive action on 12th October but not 13th? Not that it doesn't mean he couldn't have been wounded outside an attack but it just seems more likely he was hit on 12th and reported on 13th. Anyone got some details? Thanks very much in advance. Hambo Posted 15 November , 2006 Share Posted 15 November , 2006 Simon I've had a look at British Battalions on the Somme and can't see any of the Devon battalions involved in any action on the Somme that day. He may well of course have been somwhere other than on the Somme Regards Hambo

He may well of course have been somwhere other than on the Somme Regards Hambo Hi Hambo, This may fit. Anecdotal evidence suggests that he was wounded in the ankle and further that he was "shot from behind" and the family always believed he may have been shot by accident. It may well have been the case that he was the victim of friendly fire when they were out of the line or quiet or perhaps even more colouful than that! As I understand it "other ranks" names are not normally recorded but would that sort of incident make it to the war diary of the unit concerned? Kind Regards Simon

drm075 Posted 17 November , 2006 Share Posted 17 November , 2006 Do you have a name and number for your great grandfather in law? Funny you should say he was in the Glosters but with the Devons. The 1st Devons and the 12th Glosters were in the same brigade (95th)
