airclark Posted 14 November , 2006 Share Posted 14 November , 2006 Having had a nice response regarding guidance on my great-grandfather's service previously. I should be most grateful if one of you experts out there with access to "Soldiers Died in Great War" would help me solve the following problem with another relative. My grandmother used to show me a picture of her uncle who died in the Great War. His name was William Harby and he was born in Nether Broughton, Leicestershire about 1886. It is a slightly unusual name and sure enough only two matches came back from CWGC. However, both of these are from the West Yorkshire Regt as follows: HARBY, W Private 40361 d. 03/05/1917 15th Bn HARBY, W Private 51765 d. 29/12/1917 12th Bn I am hoping that the extra info from SDGW will show whether my great-uncle was one of the above by his age and place of birth. If so, then I will also wonder why he ended up in the West Yorkshire Regt and not the Leicestershire Regt as the two Bn's above were raised in York and Leeds respectively. Thanks in advance to anyone of you helpful people on here helping me play private detective. Regards Steve
