I can recommend Julie Renshaw's at Les Galets, just down the hill near the Sunken Road

Stayed in September with Sarah and Peter Wright at their B&B opposite Delville Wood - so not too far from Ovillers. Very homely with full english breakfast and sky tv - the latter either an attraction or not depending on your point of view! I enjoyed it.

Avril's is excellent too.

Also thinking of staying in Albert or Amiens. How accessible is Ovillers from Albert ?.Is it possible to hike or walk from Albert to Ovillers and are there marked footpaths etc.. or designated walks. Is any there public transport or shuttle buses from Albert.

Looking into the movements of "D" Coy,9th (Service) Battalion,Yorks & Lancs on July 1st 1916

? Public transport on the Somme ?:) Whats that?

Seriously, there is little if nothing.

You could walk from Albert to Orvillers if you really wanted to along the main road. Probably about 5 miles.

Why not stay in Bapaume if the B&Bs mentioned in this thread are not to your taste. The Hotel de la Gare is my favourite, after Avril's of course.

Good luck

There is very little public transport on the Somme and not much chance of getting a bus to any of the smaller villages. However it's only about 3.5 miles from Albert to Ovillers, so well within walking distance.

Many thanks for your replies.I'll be training it to Amiens then onto Albert and don't mind the walk to Ovlliers but was hoping for a cross country route.Any other tips for independent first time Somme visitors would be appreciated. As previously mentioned I am interested in the movements of "D" Coy,9th Battalion (Service) of the Yorks & Lancs. Definately have to visit Blighty Cemetery.

Thanks,you provide a great resource
