Trying to Identify ANYTHING!

Hiya, i wonder if anyone can help me with my g grandfather. I haven't been able to get a photo scanned in because it's broken (!!!!). I really want to find his medal card but don't know what Regiment he served in or anything. I think he was a sergeant, and i wanted to ask whether that can be identified by the stripes on his arm? Also he is wearing four medals, and in one photo he's posed infront of a sign saying 'Sergeants Mess' with various other men. He was also supposed to have been taken POW in france, would that've been recorded at all?

Sorry if this is all a bit vague, but i'm so frustrated and want to find out more about this man (btw his name was Matthew Hogan). Thanks for any help, Liz

Hi ya Liz, let's see what we can do... firstly what is your Great Grandfather's name?, secondly, how many stripes does he have on his arm? If you've got a digital camera it will probably have a macro setting (usually looks like a little flower) this enables you to take close up photos, I stopped using my scanner a while ago, the camera seems to be quicker and yes more than likely there will be some record of him being a POW. We await your reply, cheers, Jon :D

sorry liz just seen his name hiding at the bottom of yuor post. Jon :D

You really need to post the picture so someone can hopefully identify his regiment.

Ask a freind to scan the photo and put it on disc.

Thanks for the replies. I aim to get the photos on asap! Jon, he has 3 stripes on his arm. Also in another photo the soldiers are posing infront of a plaque saying 'B Company 19 Reg' which i don't really know what it means. He also is wearing a sort of sash, and the medals, i could probably ID if i had a picture infront of me!! Liz

definately a sergeant then of B company 19th Regiment of Foot perhaps, but this would make the photo pre 1900s can you see a cap badge or any markings on his shoulders?, Jon :D

I don't think it's pre 1900- i've had a closer look and it has a little '2' after the 19- sorry! it's really small! I don't suppose that means much at all?

I think seeing him on the forum will shed a lot more light, we eagerly await him :D

The man Welshdoc mentions in his 2nd post is a Michale, so probably not him
