I am trying to trace my g/fathers younger brother, but I have 2 possible John McAulays... 1 is No. S9257 died 18/7/1916 of the 10th btn and 2 is No. 300844 died 31/7/1917 of the 8th btn.. I do know my chap was born 25/1/1897... I have found No 2 on the medal cards but no mention of No 1, and is there any significance of the S in the service number.... Could someone please put me out of my misery as my head hurts... :)

Thanks very much Malcolm, it is indeed the 2nd man as Campbeltown was where he was born... What does SNWM mean... Now need to track down what happened to him but at least I know I am looking for the correct man.... Is there anywhere I can look up regimental rolls or similar to see if any of his brothers were in the regt. How can I find out if he enlisted or if called up etc.... Again thanks very much... JIM :)

Hi Jim,

SNWM is the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.

Private McAulay was in the 1/8th (Argyleshire) Battalion of the Argyles. This was a territorial battalion - you should look it up on the mother site The Long Long Trail.

I can tell you he was killed in the Battle of Pilkem Ridge, first battle in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. I will look up the War Diary info for that day for you. The Battalion was one of the lead Battalions of 152 Brigade and took their objectives with few casualties, unfortunately Pt McAulay appears to be one of them. They were just north of Kitchener Wood.

The next place to go is the Argyle Museum in Stirling Castle. If you make an appointment with the Museum you can avoid the entrance charge to the Castle. I have a map of the action which I can send you if you want with an explanation of what happened. Email me.

You can get his Medal Index Card for £3.50 from the National Archives.
