Hello

I have this picture. Now it is supposed to be my Great Grandfather - but it looks nothing like the other picture I have of him.

So who is this chap ? Picture indicates it was taken 1/7/18 at Schevungen (?) beach and the stamp on the back is an address in Rotterdam. GGdad was on leave 17/9/18- 1/10/18 so cant imagine he got leave in July as well

Thanks

Scheveningen is in Holland,a coastal town north east of The Hague and quite central,so it wasn't as if he had sneaked over the border, accidentally or otherwise, for a quick beer ! Holland was neutral in the Great War so there might be an interesting story there somewhere, what was a uniformed British soldier doing in a neutral country ???

Best wishes

Agree that he looks a very formidable WO2, wouldn't he have interned in Holland if they got a hold of him though?

Could he already have been interned in Holland? I know a lot of the RND were, after Antwerp.

Possibly looks like its been taken by a cliff. Are there any in Holland? Scheveningen is on the outskirts of the Hague (if thats the place, of course). My Dutch geography is terrible, for which i apologise.

There used to be the rank of warrant officer 3 (rd class).

But, this looks like class 1 (RSM etc).

The reason I say this is because he is wearing an open collar SD jacket and shirt and tie, something reserved for commisioned officers and WO1 rank holders.

It was taken on a beach and I think he is stood on the highest point in Holland

If this pic was taken July 1918 and he was interned after Antwerp he's kept his uniform in very good nick for nigh on four years (unless they were allowed to be sent new ones from time to time). I think the Dutch were fairly easy-going (read RND internee Charles Morgan's novel 'The Fountain') but I doubt if they sponsored trips to the seaside.

From the original picture I would say that the rank badge looks like a "Coat of Arms" and not a crown. This would suggest that he is a WO1. The cap badge does not look like any of the RND badges as it appears to be circular in shape (more like a RE badge). Only a more detailed scan of the image would reveal the detail needed for both the rank and cap badges.

I note that he also appears to have a dark coloured medal ribbon on his jacket.

By the way the highest point in the Netherlands is just on the Dutch/German/Belgian border just to the south of Brunssum (ie the bottom right corner of Holland). The dutch even have a large tower there to improve the view of three countries at the same time.

The angle of the sea relative to the person would suggest some coastal rocks and not a cliff (unless it is a very small cliff).

I hope that this helps. Is there any chance of a more detailed scan of the badges?

Maybe this is the "cliff"
Its a Strandhoofd, a stone construction to hold the sand on the beaches.
