Help with naval record

Can anybody help me understand my great-grandfathers naval service record. I am having trouble understanding the names of the ships. I know vivid 2 was a naval base in Devenport, but the names of the ships and the name in the brackets are getting me confused, for example there was an HMS Columbine but also a HMS Valkyrie. So if it says Columbine(Valkyrie) what was the name of the ship he served on. Any details of any ot the ships would also be a help

I have attached the record

Thanks for any help. :)

Where one of two ships' names appears in brackets, the former is the name of the Accounting Base (for ships that did not keep their own pay accounts) and the name in brackets is the name of the ship the man actually served in. In this case he served in HMS VALKYRIE which was a tender to HMS COLUMBINE, a TBD base near Rosyth.

Type in "COLUMBINE" in the forum search facility and see what you get.

His enlistment papers are held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

He served on 2 destroyers His Majesty's Ships Vehement (she was completed as a mine layer) and Valkyrie (she was a Flotilla Leader). Destroyers only had limited range and capasity so operated from depot ships that provided stores, mail, and pay etc.

He was on board and survived when Vehement hit a mine and sank on the night of 1/2 August 1918.

Vehement is illustrated here http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/esco...#HMS%20Vehement

Valkyrie is illustrated here http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/valkyrie.htm

Hi Scott, my Grandfather was serving on Valkyrie alongside your GGFather.

Edward Prestidge - also a stoker. My PDF of his record and that of the next rating in the ledger - who was also a Stoker on Valkyrie! is 108k so I can't upload it here. But if you want to view it it's at the world naval ships dot com forum > royal navy ships and crews > jump to page 7. My goal is to find out more about the engine room crew of Valkyrie there's a photo of 14 of them ( whole compliment? ) Ted has arms crossed on the right under gun barrel. Do you have any photos of Alvon and his crewmates? Which one is Alvon in my photo?

Regards.

Hi

Valkyrie Was one of a group of eight destroyers despatched from the Harwich force to escort a convoy from the Dutch coast. She struck a mine at 10.15pm on 22nd Dec.'17, five miles west of Maas light. Thick banks of drifting fog confused the situation but Valkyrie remained afloat and was eventually towed to safety by Sylph. At 3.15am (23rd) Torrent manoeuvring to pick up men seen in the water also struck a mine, she broke in two and sank quickly, only seven men survived of the crew of one hundred and five. Surprise and Tornado were also sunk in similar circumstances on the 23rd with heavy loss of life.

Cheers, Terry

Thanks for the list Kevin, you've saved me some slogging!

I was aware that Petty Officer Adams had died in 1917, he was laid to rest at Wembdon Road Cemetry - Bridgwater Somerset.

Sorry to Scott - I seem to have hi-jacked your topic. I'll let the mods know, perhaps they could move the Valkyrie crew list to a new location...

Not seen their registers as yet - still at the early stages, and being tighter than the proverbial.... I reckon it'll be cheaper than £3:50 a pop to see

who else is generous enough to post the pdf on the forums

Cheers!

HMS Valkyrie - my Grandfather was an engineer on this ship from it's early days, through the incident off Maas (where he was awarded the DSM) I would love to see the photo!!
