Le_Treport Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Is 'The Somme' worth watching tonight (Ch4)? I think it was shown on 01.07 this year - but I missed it. Otherwise I'll watch Voices of the Great War/digging the trenches or two men went to war or finding the fallen,,,,,, Like the busses they all comes at once! Steven Broomfield Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 It was discussed at the time, but I can't find the thread. Personally, I enjoyed it. Also personally, Mrs B and I are taking the daughters to dinner in a French restaurant in Winchester, where I'll raise a glass in memory!
Le_Treport Posted 11 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Personally, I enjoyed it. I shall take that as a good endorsement.... I did try searching on The Somme, but for some reason had quite a large number of hits.....
John_Hartley Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Is 'The Somme' worth watching tonight (Ch4)? I think it was shown on 01.07 this year Think it was shown this time last year. It majors on 22/Manchester which is local interest for me. I recall there being quite a lot of comments about things being "wrong", but I enjoyed it. But then, I'm not one to spot that it's "wrong". Kookaburra Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Is 'The Somme' worth watching tonight (Ch4)? I saw it yesterday and for me it was very moving and highly educational given my very sparse knowledge of the Great War. It was preceded here by Verdun and The Somme seemed to follow on from Verdun. We also had a 2 hour documentary on Gallipoli which was narrated by Jeremy Irons with interviews through out by authors Les Carlyon and Christopher Pugsley which was also very enlightening for me too. Cheers, Diane

Liam Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 You noticed that Boro won today as well? Can't wait Mike S Been to see the mighty Port Vale beat Lincoln to go through to the next round of the cup. Going back to the subject in hand I did watch The Somme. I saw it earlier this year and thought it was excellent. There were a few moaners at the time who complained that there were minor inaccuracies which I thought was unfair but a first class programme and really bought to life the events of that day as well as they can be on film. Desmond7 Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 I had planned to watch the History Channel's 'Digging the Trenches' prog. tomorrow. Saw a half hour of it tonight before being over-run by daughter and wife in search of sky control. It looked quite promising. Re - C4's Somme ... sorry John I know the Manchester bit is v.good and was thinking of you as I watched it again (especially now I've been to Dzig Alley) but it still annoys the bejasus out of me when they say ...'the only succesful break into the German line was in the south beside the French' ... please take that the right way! You now where I am coming from .. parochially speaking! Aside from minor annoyances, still a sobering programme. Why didn't the BEEB schedule their version of 'Somme' for a repeat? Thoght it would have been ideal?
Dave T Posted 12 November , 2006 Share Posted 12 November , 2006 Just finished watching Digging the Trenches and found it absolutely fascinating, now watching the "First and Last." Going to be a late night!
Le_Treport Posted 13 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 13 November , 2006 C4 continuity announcer was a bit over the top (oops!) I thought. Obviously we were expected to have the memory span of a goldfish as she told us what was about to happen before each bit. I laughed at the apology for a bit of swearing which had obviously been overlooked. C4 were probably anticipating angry phone calls so got their apology in fast.
