I am trying to find out what action my great, great etc. uncle was involved in when he was killed. He was a stretcher bearer with 5th Battalion Royal Berkshires and was recorded as being killed on 3rd July 1916. He is commemorated at Thiepval. Any ideas please?

The 5th Berkshires were part of 12th Div. On 3rd july they attacked towards Ovillers (3.15 am). Betwwen the Albert to Bapaume Road and Authuille Wood and the 35th brigade icluding the 5th B were on the right flank. From memory the attack was a failure and the Div had over 2000 casualties. The 12th had relieved the 8th Div on the night of 1/2nd july.

If you contact the Regimental Museum on 01722 419419 or the Website at www.thewardrobe.org.uk you will find refrence to a CD (From a Book) called 'On The Somme' which tells the story of the Royal Berkshire Kitchener battalions on the Somme. It covers the action you are interseted in , in some detail.

Hope that helps

Cheers
