Matt Dixon Posted 10 November , 2006 Share Posted 10 November , 2006 There is no reason to bin this thread simply because the link is to a French web page. Doubtless a search on the Net will reveal all details in English within time.
uncle bill Posted 10 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 10 November , 2006 this is an edited and fast translation of what I think is of interest to us all. Sorry I couldn't do it before but the kids need to eat and the baby needed a bath. Don't know what you meant by the bin it comment Kevinaka ? Hope you're happy now ! The oldest French poilu dies on the eve of armistice day The oldest First World War soldier, Maurice Floquet , bed ridden for the last few days at the home of one of his daughters at Montaauroux, a village in the Varois region, peacefully passed away at the age of 111, during the night of Thursday- Friday on the eve of the Armistice Day commemorations. Maurice Floquet had been feeling tired for several days. M. Floquet was without doubt the world's oldest war veteran. With his passing away there are now only four remaining Great War veterans, the youngest being René Riffaud who at 107 years old will be present at the Paris commemorations this Saturday. Maurice Floquet was mobilized at the age of 19 in September 1914. With the 26e régiment d'infanterie, he participated in the first battles on the Somme where he was wounded.avait été blessé. He was wounded again on September 25, 1915 on the Marne. Severely wounded to the head and left arm by grenade fragments, he was trepanned twice, losing the use of an ear and underwent several grafts. After a long period in hospital he was not deemed unfit for service and finished the war in a weapons factory in Sochaux.
