Verrinder Ian Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 Hello, Corporal James Henry Henderson (No. 12906) MSM, 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, was killed on 9th October 1918. He's buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension in Italy. This much I know from the CWGC website and from information supplied by the Coldstreamer (a kind fellow who inhabits this forum - thanks again). Anyway, what I'm wondering is whether anybody can shed any light on what he might have been doing, or with what unit he might have been fighting, when he was killed? Any information or theories gratefully received. Cheers, Ian.
sotonmate Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 Ian I couldn't trace the 3CG to Italy, that's not to say they weren't there, the soldier certainly was. In the Long Long Trail at the top of this page, click on infantry regiments, and click on Coldstream Guards, you will see that they were put into GHQ Reserve in early 1918. It may have been that some of the troops were attached to another Unit for the Italian Campaign, where the Italians were fighting the Germans and not doing very well at the end of 1917. Read this to fill yourself in: http://www.1914-1918.net/italy.htm Best wishes Sotonmate
Coldstreamer Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 Only other chap I can find is L/Cpl Perrin who died Italy 30/10/18 , late of the 4th btn - and they didnt go to Italy either Odd how both are died but as the Regiment wasnt there perhaps records not as accurate. And both L/Cpl- perhaps there to instill a bit of Guards discipline .. And odd placements are not unusual - I have medals to a man who served in Australia in the early 1900s with the CG
manchester regiment Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 i have a 9th manchester serving in CANADA,he was sent as a drilling instructor, maybe the ref to guards discipline isnt far off the mark, they could have been instructors, does SDGW state if they were killed or could they have died of disease, just a thought, bernard

Verrinder Ian Posted 11 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Thanks gents. I think the idea that he was sent out to add a bit of Guards discipline or to give some form of instruction sounds most likely. Does anybody know what units were near Asiago/Montecchio at the time? Ian.
sotonmate Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Ian There were 2 Divisions that I know of, 23 and 48. Go to Long Long Trail and search on them seperately and get the sopecific Battalion build up of the Div and the battles engaged. Sotonmate
Coldstreamer Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 why not look at the other graves in the cemetery and try and build a picture of units that way ?
