John_Hartley Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 Steve From CheshireBMD. Fred Roome born 1889. Harry in 1896. Both births registered in West Macclesfield district which, I think, puts them on the plot for Whaley. No mention of the family in the 1914 Kellys Directory so presumably the fishmongers doesnt go that far back. There are several Harry Plant listed in the county of the right age so couldnt pick one. zephyr4 Posted 9 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 9 November , 2006 Coldstreamer. Surrey is a bit to far for me to travel. Is there any members on the forum who do this for people, if so could you let me know who so I can get in touch and find out how much it costs. Thanks Steve

Coldstreamer Posted 9 November , 2006 Share Posted 9 November , 2006 You could do it in 3 hrs 15 mins on a good day! But you are right its a long way for just a few - some pals will do look ups - its a quick job when you know what you are doing unless the soldiers is Jones/Smith or other popular names - just needs that one kind person to read this..... zephyr4 Posted 10 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 10 November , 2006 Just found this and it looks like Harry and Fred maybe from Macclesfield. http://www.carlscam.com/macclesfield/ccschoolmem.htm
John_Hartley Posted 10 November , 2006 Share Posted 10 November , 2006 Steve I see Plant is on the Whaley memorial. There's also a WW2 Harold on the Alderley & Wilmslow memorials. Son? Nephew? May be worth popping in Wilmlsow Library to have a nosy at the 1940s newspapers? John
zephyr4 Posted 10 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 10 November , 2006 John, Harry has a very low number 1856 would he be a pre-war soldier. Steve
John_Hartley Posted 10 November , 2006 Share Posted 10 November , 2006 Steve My guess would be that he was. Certainly with 6/Cheshire, I reckon upto about 2250 went overseas in Sept 14. I assume, though, if he was from the Macc area, that'll he'll have been 7/Ches. The other Steve (Mercian Volunteer) possibly has a better idea. I'm pretty sure he's done some research into their numbering. Drop him a PM. I'll try and think on to ask him if I see him at WFA tonight. Mercian Volunteer Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Please to confirm for you that Harry Roome was a pre-war Territorial in Macclesfield with 1/7th. This was confirmed from newspaper sources. Frank's name is as you know on the Macc Memorial. It would appear that the family moved to Whaley Bridge after the war as confirmed from the CWGC details. Looking at the size of the family, the % population in Macc must have decreased somewhat when they departed! There is always confuson with 1/6th & 1/7th numbers as there used the same low four figure numbers. Regards, Steve
John_Hartley Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Steve (Mercian) I meant to mention this to you last night. But I left immediately after the speaker finished - I needed to go home and slash my wrists to relieve the boredom. I thought it was dire! They are held at Cheshire Records Office ( Chester ). They only have the 1919 one, not the 1918 ( lost )! Steve
John_Hartley Posted 11 November , 2006 Share Posted 11 November , 2006 Steve (Z4) A bit of number crunching with SDGW supports 10th Battalion. Enlistment in early 1916 by my reckoning. Wouldnt like to be more precise than, say, January - April. John

Guest cssimpson Posted 26 February , 2011 Share Posted 26 February , 2011 Steve This is Harry Roome taken after a gas attack I think, Harry Roome married Annie Depledge and they lived for many years on Buxton Road before moving into Cromford Court, Harry worked for the Tax office, Harold Roome had the Fishmongers on Market Street, they knew each other as brothers, although evidence now suggests that maybe they were Uncle & Nephew, Harry was brother in law to Clifford Howe who married Jessie Depledge, I have another photo of him in uniform somewhere, both daughters of James (Jim) Depledge (Sherwood Foresters)
