Which German Unit faced the Devonshires on the first day of the Somme? based in or around Mametz? Have just established the bullets I found in a field ( but took photos of ) are G98 rounds from the Mauser 98.

Hence the interest

Have you consulted Jack Sheldon's book The German Army on the Somme 1914 - 1916? Should have your answer. He also just came out with two field guides to the Somme from the German perspective. His work is of the highest standard.

109th/110th and 111th seem to be the ones in the area if I read Jack Sheldon's book correctly.

The answer is RIR 109. Herewith a map showing which company was defending which bit of the sector. If you have any additional questions feel free to ask. If I do not know the answer, I shall soon tell you.

It is a Baden unit from ther 28th Reserve Division. They served at various locations on the Somme from Late September 1914 through 1 July 1916 and suffered extensive casualties on 1 July. My records, etc. are buried currently due to windows and floor work but I hope to have access soon.
