john w. Posted 7 November , 2006 Share Posted 7 November , 2006 Which German Unit faced the Devonshires on the first day of the Somme? based in or around Mametz? Have just established the bullets I found in a field ( but took photos of ) are G98 rounds from the Mauser 98. Hence the interest John
bob lembke Posted 8 November , 2006 Share Posted 8 November , 2006 Have you consulted Jack Sheldon's book The German Army on the Somme 1914 - 1916? Should have your answer. He also just came out with two field guides to the Somme from the German perspective. His work is of the highest standard. Bob Lembke

Ralph J. Whitehead Posted 8 November , 2006 Share Posted 8 November , 2006 It is a Baden unit from ther 28th Reserve Division. They served at various locations on the Somme from Late September 1914 through 1 July 1916 and suffered extensive casualties on 1 July. My records, etc. are buried currently due to windows and floor work but I hope to have access soon. Ralph
