Well done Terry, he seems a very late casualty, was he killed in the post war turbulence in Ireland?

No idea, John

He could have died in service or be a post-discharge death due to service - considering his age, probably the first of these.

On a couple of previous posts I have asked for help in tracking down the story of Pte. Leyland. Yesterday, after 9 years of research and letter writing the Commission added his name to their database:

Private ALFRED LEYLAND

2689285, 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars, who died age 19, on 26 July 1921.

Son of Mr Ellis Leyland, of 45 Hallfield Street, St. Helens, Lancs.

Remembered with honour

CURRAGH MILITARY CEMETERY

Many thanks to all the 'Pals' who answered my questions, to Maria at the Commission for her efforts on my behalf, to Richard Howman at the British War Memorial Project, Beverly Hutchinson at the Historical Disclosures Office, APC and to Captain O'Neil at the Directorate of Manning (Army).

Though the milestone of having Pte. Leyland properly commemroated has been achieved I'd still be interested to hear from anyone with any further information on him or with links to the Hallfield Street area of St Helens.

Dear all,

I placed a new post regarding Alfred Leyland before reading this one

Yes, it was me who put his name forward initially in 1997. It's taken 9 years to convince the army and the Commission that he existed and to then have him added to the database.

As noted above he did indeed commit suicide. As far as I can see from his service record, released to me last year, he had requested a transfer to the 18th Hussars, then in India, so he could serve alongside his brother. Despite having this transfer confirmed by the GOC London District he was instead posted to the 10th Hussars on active service in Ireland. After serving a period in military dentention for going absent Alfred shot himself 'whilst of unsound mind' (according to his death certificate) on July 26th 1921. He was 19.

A very sad story but at least he's now remembered properly through the Commission.

Congratulations on the result. And for sticking with it.

As the old saying goes "A researcher's gotta do, what a researcher's gotta do."
