dave ricketts Posted 13 November , 2003 Share Posted 13 November , 2003 Thought that some people might find this of interest. In the Leicester Mail of 20th September 1917 there is an article entitled "CORPS OF FERRETS To Fight the Somme Rats" Extracts from the article ".... At Mr Hamlyn's place by London Docks hundreds of these lithe, active and vicious creatures were being packed by men wearing stout leather gauntlets. They were going to France. Many of them were destined for the Somme, and to a village there that is no longer on the map....... .......They are to fight the rats. The west side of that area swarms with rats ("as big as rabbits")........ A systematic attempt is being made to reduce them." From what I have read elsewhere, this was obviously a vain attempt, but I wonder which units had ferrets attached to them?
Muerrisch Posted 13 November , 2003 Share Posted 13 November , 2003 Richard Whitely once had a ferret attached to him, as watchers of YTV will recall with huge pleasure. Managed to keep it out of his trousers, however.
tintin1689 Posted 13 November , 2003 Share Posted 13 November , 2003 I saw a written Parliamentary Answer once in Hansard:- "No ferrets are maintained at public expense" apparently some MP had seen an article in Soldier about troops in BAOR having a ferret club
