The chief clue concerning unit affiliation is the state cockade on the cap (this is the one on the dark-coloured cap band.) As the outer ring seems to be white or yellow, the possibilities include Bavaria, Saxony, Hesse and Baden. That's the good news. The bad news is that these states provided between 25% and 30% of the units that served in the German Army in World War I.

If we knew the regiment, the pattern on the 'sword knot' on the bayonet (what the German's called the 'Troddel') would tell us the soldier's company and battalion. However, without knowing the regiment, this is of limited use.
