Thanks for you quick response Lorac,

Yes, thats him, we did look on CWGC site and found the information you posted.

We also have the reference to Lt. Col. Philip Bent earning the VC in this action.

Regards,

Norman

That seems to place him with 21st Division, taking part in 'Third Ypres'. There is some information, including maps, on the site which hosts this Forum, at http://www.1914-1918.net/bat20.htm

Also, if you search in the 'Cemeteries' section of the CWGC site for 'Polygon', you will find a clear description of how to get to the area where this fighting occurred, just to the East of Ieper.

Hi,

help required regarding Frank Marriot who was killed on 1 October 1917, thought to be during the Battle of Polygon Wood. He was never found and his Grand Daughter would like to visit the area. Does anybody have a map showing the location of this action? Or any other information. Thanks.

Regards,

Norman

Norman,

I was in Polygon Wood a couple of years ago - it is very serene. Tyne Cot Memorial is worth the trip, as you can see how many Leicestershire Regiment men have no known graves These include Philip Bent. There are a fair number of "Unknowns" of the Leicestershire Regiment in the cemeteries of the area.

From Frank Marriot's Regimental Number (7052) I would believe that he was a pre-war regular and was most probably a Reservist.

There is a good description of the 9th Battalion's time, with the rest of 110 Brigade, in the Polygon Wood fighting in Matthew Richardson's "The Tigers - 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Service Battalions" published by Leo Cooper in 2001.
