Can anyone date this base protector please.

I would say it is a cruciform from a 13Pdr, it was to protect the percussion cap on the base of the cartridge.

To take it a step further. They (all field gun ammunition ) seemed to come packed with these clips. They were designed to have tapes in the slots in their sides to enable them to be removed from limbers.

The reason I ask is that it seems slightly smaller than the usual 18 pounder and I don't recognise the markings. I feel that it is post WW1.

I have just measured the base of my 13 Pdr cartridge Case, I can confirm its a cruciform from a 13 Pdr.

John,

Didn't we still have a similar thing on the base of the pack-how ammunition which was fired through the Lt Gun L118s at Larkhill in the 80's or is my memory going daft?

David

We had the cruciforms on the Abbot and the Light Gun but not on the Pack How.

John,

Roger that - I knew it was 105mm something because I remember pinging them off cartridges on my YOs course in '86 but never having served with Abbots i got it into my head that it was on L118s. Thanks for putting me straight!

regards

David
