Thanks to the incredible information available in the forum and from links provided in previous posts - we have already started to find out some information on my husband's grandad's service in the RN in WW1.

His service record lists:

Pembroke (as Stoker 11) 29 Dec 15 - 13 Mar 16

We have read that this was Chatham - so presume initial training

Intrepid (as Stoker 11) 14 Mar 16 - 18 Dec 16

Does anyone know what she was doing in 1916 - we have seen her listed as a depot ship in North Russia in 1915 and the same in the White Sea in 1917 and know she finished her days at Zeebrugge

Pembroke 11 (Stoker 11) 19 Dec 16 - 14 Mar 17

The RNAS base at Eastchurch on Sheppey - a training stint again??

Blonde (Stoker 1) 15 Mar 17 - 3 Mar 19

A sister ship to HMS Blanche (mentioned on the forum several times) - Again any info on where the Blonde might have been - we read she was converted to lay mines in Sep 17 - but never used as a minelayer

We had always understood that large scars from burns that he had on his chest and back of his neck were as a result of his service - but the record shows he already had them as an 18 year old when he enlisted!

Any extra info that anyone can provide would be much appreciated

Finally we were all ready to write off to the FAA Museum for his enlistment details - till we read on the website that it was taking up to a year to process requests. Is this somewhere anyone goes on a regular basis - like Kew - and could perhaps look him up for us - as we are in Australia we won't be able to get there any time soon

Many Thanks

Sue Keene

Sue, Go ahead and e-mail the FAAM. I am sure they will respond very quickly for your simple request for a copy of his enlistment papers. The "up to a year" applies to requests that require the small FAAM curatorial team to undertake major research in the archives. Give them as much detail as you can.

Many thanks to sotonmate for the extra pictures - and horatio2 for the advice.

We have emailed the FAA Museum and hope they will be able to help us

Intrepid North Russia 1915-1916

His stint at Pemboke II might be that he was stoking their boilers! Coal fired boilers were the norm.
