Amiens defense line

Can anyone please provide information about the “Amiens Defense line” that runs north south about ten miles due east of Amiens. I have found some references to this defense line mainly from accounts during the August 1918 offensive where both sides “occupied these old defense lines”. I am particularly interested in the area in front of Roye to where it cross’s the rive Avre.

Many thanks

Hello Paul - and welcome to the forum!

I've got a map in front of me from "Hell's Corner" (by J L Granattein) - a book about the Canadians experience in WW1. As you say, this map is about the August 1918 battle, but it shows the 'Outer Amiens defence line' running down from Harbonnieres, just E of Caix and Le Quesnel before it hits the main Amiens to Roye road. However, it then stops as the area south towards the Avre was occupied by the French Corps.... but perhaps this is what you are interested in?

I'll have a look in my 'library' to see if I can find more, as this area is of interest to me!

Hello and many thanks for the reply and the welcome to the forum. Yes, it is the French sector just below the Canadian line/Amiens/Roye road that interests me the most. How far did this line extend below the river Avre? When was it built? Are there any trench maps of this particular area? What is known about the French units that served there? I could go on. So anything you may have about this sector of the Amiens Defence line and it's history from 1916 onwards would be most welcome. Was there much action on this part of the Front before the town of Roye other than in August 1918?

I look forward to hearing about anything you may have in your library.

Kind regards

Norm Christie's KING AND EMPIRE series includes a book on the Battle of Amiens. Though I have not seen this one, judging from his others, it will have many maps and pictures.

Here's the link:

Go to BOOKS

and then KING AND EMPIRE. The book on Amiens is the 3rd in the 2nd row.
