pietro Posted 31 October , 2006 Share Posted 31 October , 2006 Hi, Is it possible to find out if and what English regiment was in Newcastle, Co. Down, Ireland during the early part of 1917? A lot of the 13th RIR came from that area, but I believe from older family members that other soldiers "from across the water" were there sometimes too during WW1. sotonmate Posted 1 November , 2006 Share Posted 1 November , 2006 Pietro I counted 26 Battalions which have been listed as serving in Ireland around 1917-1918. There are many others which are merely stated as never leaving the UK during that War,technically Northern Ireland was the UK,so there may be many more too. They were mostly reserve battalions, from which reinforcements were drawn at times of depletion in battle. There was no named barracks/town nominated, merely Ireland. I will list the main regiments, and year if known, for you: Black Watch 1917 Cameron Highlanders 1917 Cameronians(2) disbanded in Ireland 1918 Devonshire 1918 Dorset 1918 Duke of Cornwall L.I. 1918 Durham L.I. 1917 Hampshire 1918 Highland Cyclist Bn 1918 Kings Liverpool 1917 KOSB (2) 1 date not known, the other disbanded in Ireland 1918 KOYLI 1918 Lincolnshire 1918 Norfolk 1918 Berkshire 1917 Royal Scots (2) 1918 Royal Scots Fusiliers disbanded in Ireland 1918 Sussex Cyclist Bn date not known Welsh Fusiliers (2) date not known Shropshire L.I. 1917 South Lancs 1918 Wiltshire 1918 Your note about the 13th RIR-they were drawn from County Down from Sept 1914 and later, in Aug 1916, amalgamated with the 11th South Armagh Bn to become the 11/13th RIR. I gleaned all this from the Regiments section in the Long Long Trail ! I learned something too ! Best wishes Sotonmate KO
pietro Posted 7 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 7 November , 2006 Thanks for the reply - I'll take a longer look at the section in the Long Long Trail. I've also been thinking if I have a look at the records for the local newspaper, I might get the answer. Thanks again! P
