Does anyone have any info about the 4th battalion seaforth highlanders and what they might have been doing on 18th November 1916? I have a relative who was killed that day while serving with them. he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial so I am assuming that the battalion was in the Somme area.

Thanks

Angela

Hi Angela

The battalion was involved in the Battle of the Ancre, the final battle of the 1916 Somme offensive. They were heavily involved in fighting over previous days but on the 18th they were in the recently captured Beaumont Hamel while the 32nd Division were attacking and according to the battalion history.

"There was an unsuccessful attack on the 18th by the 32nd Division, which suffered severly. Beaumont Hamel was shelled and the battalion lost eight men killed and sixteen wounded."

It sounds like your relative was one of these
