My brother and I reported the apparently neglected civilian gravestones of Major Inglis and Captain Holman to the CWGC UK Area Office on 21st October 2004. The reply we had on 22nd November 2004 was that they had inspected the gravestones and would contact the church authorities and seek their permission to erect war pattern headstones at the head of these graves.

I last visited the churchyard on 28th September 2006 and the graves were still as can be seen in the link above.

Regards

Jimmy

It can be the piece of string reply!

There are many legal issues to be resolved as CWGC has no rights over private graves in the UK.

It can take several years to get the appropriate permissions - and they may not be forthcoming. Once all the legalities are tied up successfully, it usually takes a year to order, manufacture and deliver a new headstone from CWGC's workshop in France - sometimes longer depending on schedules.

Terry - thank you for the clairification; I assumed that the issue was one of family approval but was not sure.
