THE SOMME

A Day in the Life Special

74 year old Teddy Colligan is at an age when he should be slowing down. Instead, his life has moved up a gear.

He was asked to help out at The Ulster Tower in northern France, for a fortnight. That was five years ago! Today, he’s still there, and enjoying every moment. Along with his wife, Teddy is giving a warm Northern Ireland welcome to a growing army of battlefield visitors.

The Somme has a unique place in the history of Ireland. Soldiers from the unionist and nationalist traditions took part - but for entirely different reasons.

This year is the 90th anniversary of the battle and Irish people are coming to the Somme in search of their family histories. The battlefield has become a place of remembrance and reconciliation for people from all over Ireland.

Teddy Colligan says, “If we turn our backs on all the soldiers who fought here, 90 years ago, then they died in vain!”

The Somme – A Day In The Life Special, Tuesday 7 November at 19.30 with a repeat on Remembrance Sunday (12 November) at 18.00 on UTV.

The boul Ted with Paul Clarke of UTV who was doing the media bit round UT and Tval on July 1 etc.

Thanks for the note - looks interesting.

Most of us will probably not normally receive Ulster TV. This web page below explains how to add it to your Sky channels. You need to use Frequency 10906 in the third list of channels down. It then needs to be accessed through Services/Other channels. A reminder cannot be set as the EPG does not work in this respect.
