Lost in Tilloy Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Hi Could anyone tell me if there is a naval equivalent of the SDGW CD-Rom either in CD or book form? I'm particularly interested in trying to identify a source that would reveal where sailors were born, enlisted and where their residence was in order research particular memorials. Does any such source exist? Regards LIT
auchonvillerssomme Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 The Cross of Sacrifice book lists Non- commisisioned Officers, men and women of the United Kingdom, Commonwealth and Empire who died in the service of the royal navy, royal marines, RNAS RFC and the RAF 1914-1921. it lists them in surname, first names rank unit ie RN RM etc. service number Ship or shore base date of death and place of burial or commemoration. isbn 1873058 41 1 Mick
horatio2 Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Beware, of Cross of Sacrifice though. There is a large number of missing entries in the 'H' pages of Volume IV (NCOs, Men and Women) because of mis-printing. The Addendum to give you these names is (scandalously in my opinion) only available if you buy Volume V (Merchant Navy) for about £30. What a rip-off! kin47 Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Hello Good news/bad news. CROSS is a good reference, but the Volume 5 addenda doesn't pick up everyone they omitted in Volume IV. All best don

Lost in Tilloy Posted 29 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Hi Many thanks to everyone who has responded. I'll try my local library to see if they have a copy of the books mentioned and then decide if they're worth adding to my Christmas list! Cheers LIT
espiegle Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 National Archives- ADM 243 I think. This has several volumes with all the sailors killed in WW1. They are listed alphabetically and give details of dob, next of kin and how died. Andrew

John Morcombe Posted 2 November , 2006 Share Posted 2 November , 2006 I have completed an RND Roll of Honour which gives as much detail as could be found from all sources. See the thread on Ernest Burlinson. The RND Roll is online at military-genealogy.com, but I would be pleased to circumvent this & provide searched for any RND type. Lost in Tilloy Posted 2 November , 2006 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2006 Hi John Many thanks for the offer. I know that there are a few RND men mentioned on some memorials that I will be researching in the future. I will keep your kind offer in mind.
