Macthomas Posted 28 October , 2006 Share Posted 28 October , 2006 I am hoping for a bit of luck here. I am hoping someone has done some reasearch on this chap and can tell me what his home address was and / or who his parents were. I am trying to see if he fits into my family tree. If anyone has a photo of him that may be helpful. The man in question is 656 Pte G Thomson 1/ Royal Highlanders. 656 Pte G Thomson was awarded The Military Medal and the French Medaille Militaire as well as the 1914 star BWM and VM. I came across this group approx 11 years ago through a medal search in Medal News magazine while trying to locate the medals of my grandfather, 2346 Pte G Thomson 7th Bn R.Highlander, which, as I have stated before were stolen a long time ago. I do know that amongst the items stolen were at least one 1914 star ( at least two Family groups in total). Only one medal was left by the thief and that was the Victory medal to 2346 G Thomson possibly because it had been defaced, which I still have. I did locate the medals to 656 but am unsure if they are still there as I never kept in touch with the owner. I believe they had previously been in the collection of the Late Maj.J.L.R Samson. If you can help, please do so as I may be assuming the wrong G Thomsons medal was my grandfathers I would also be interested in any further information (other than that available from CWGC) on Pte 2347 W Thomson 7th Bn Royal Highlanders KIA 30/6/16 and his brother S/11832 Pte G Thomson KIA 18/8/1916 and possibly also their other brother Peter Thomson no details known. I do not know of any relationship yet between myself and these people but it does appear likely due to the sequential numbers. Thanks
marksimner Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Try posting this question on the British Medal Forum. There are a lot of members on there with all sorts of research and data and might be able to help: http://www.britishmedalforum.com Failing that its a trip to the National Archives (or employ a researcher to do it for you). Macthomas Posted 29 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Thanks for that idea Mark, I have added this message onto http://www.britishmedalforum.com/ I hope some one can help. I dont know whether to try writing to the guy that had the medals as it was 11 years ago and he may have moved. I probably will give it a try, nothing to lose. It did seem like a good possibility at the time, that these could have been my families medals as they were in a location close to one of the areas where we reckoned they would have been sold, but that could just be clutching at straws. The reason I never stayed in touch with the owner was that my wife and I stared to have children and things just got too busy. The kids are growing up now so it is becoming important again to try and find out about this kind of thing. Cheers
marksimner Posted 29 October , 2006 Share Posted 29 October , 2006 Like you say its worth a try as you never know. I bought an MM group last week and posted the details of the recipient on the Medal Forum to see if anyone had any info on him. A forum member then told me he once owned that very group but had sold them some years ago but never researched them. Snce then they have been in a private collection then sold on to a dealer who I purchased the medals off. A number of other forum members have managed to supply me with details of the recipient. I am always amazed at the level of knowledge some people have on this and the medal forum. So its always good to ask even if you feel it is a long shot - someone out there knows the answer!
