dhubthaigh Posted 28 October , 2006 Share Posted 28 October , 2006 Hello, John Clark Pvt 20238 was KIA on 29th July 1916 fighting with the 15th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. This would be during the Somme offensive but can any Pals give me any background to the day and which action this may have been or what it was termed?. Thanks in anticipation. regards, Mark
Greenwoodman Posted 28 October , 2006 Share Posted 28 October , 2006 According to Westlake's "British Battalions on the Somme" 15th Cheshires cames out of the trenches in the Maltz Horn Area, Arrow head Copse (where they arrived 26/07/1916) and went to Talus Boise on 28/07/1916. To reserve positions north of Carnoy on 30/07/1916. 15th were not mentioned for that period in Crookenden's "History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War". John_Hartley Posted 28 October , 2006 Share Posted 28 October , 2006 Mark "Cheshire Bantams " by Stephen McGreal, records they were in trenches near Maltz Horn Farm. The tour of duty had started in the 26th and had been charcterised by heavy enemy shelling. There is only mention that the shelling continued on 29th. They were relieved during the evening by the 16th. The book says "The trenches were congested with men from both battalions when salvoes rained down on the left and central trenches." The only further references to the evening are about casualties amongst the 16th battalion. John
