mcblondie Posted 27 October , 2006 Share Posted 27 October , 2006 Hi there, I have been trying to trace my grandfather's Army life, I have found 2 MIC for the name Jonas Lokas and Jonas Zokas. My g.father was Lithuanian and over many, many years our family name has been mis-spelt. I know that he was in the Labour Corp in 1918 as it states it on one of his children's death certificate that he was in the 9th (Russian) Labour Battalion. Due to the unusual name i haven't found anything with his name, but the 2 MIC with possible mis spellings of his name. If some kind soul could do a search for me i would be eternally grateful. I'm looking to see if this is my grandfather so that i can send for his service records. I am attaching a copy of the 2 MIC's if anyone can help. Also if anyone can advise me of what battalion/regiments etc i would be grateful. Sorry but the Jonas Zokas MIC i have been unable to download Thanks in anticipation. sotonmate Posted 27 October , 2006 Share Posted 27 October , 2006 Katie There certainly are two medal cards with different names. I think that one of them has been interpreted wrongly because of a staple mark which when photocopied is made to look like the top of a Z ! Anyway there are,I believe,3 awards on view. On the second card there is a ref LC4276 which I think refers to the issue of a Silver War Badge. The other MIC has the two medals British War Medal and the Victory Medal. These are both on Roll LC/101B220 Page22345. I see that there is a War Diary for the Russian Labour Corps for 1918 (March to August) at the National Archives under WO95/4994. Good hunting ! Sotonmate Oh my God, Sotonmate, I can't believe it!!! You have really cheered me up. The staple being there is amazing I just assumed as did the people who documented these MIC's on the NA that the letter was in fact a Z. So now at least I know that it's definitely an "L". As for there being a war diary "this is great news" i will contact the NA and see if i can download this info. Thank you so, so, so much. Forever in your debt Katie

According to the NA Catalogue the diary comes under the SALONIKA, MACEDONIA, TURKEY BLACK SEA, CAUCASUS AND SOUTH RUSSIA theatres, just to give you a very rough idea as to where the "Russian Labour Corps" was operating. However, I don't believe you'll be able to download it online as it isn't one of the diaries that have been digitised (as far as I can see). I believe you'll either have to NA, Kew yourself to view it, get somebody to do it on your behalf or request an estimate of copying cost from the NA itself. Hope this helps. Steve Thank you, I have just contacted NA and they are going to mail out a copy to me (price very reasonable). Thanks for the help. No wonder i couldn't find the diary, there was no such number lol.
