dycer Posted 11 November , 2003 Share Posted 11 November , 2003 I have inherited 3 "trench maps". The first is Lille 8(SET.D Sheet 8.) Scale is 1:80000 and was printed on paper by the Ordnance Survey in 1912. The second two are Belgium and France(Sheet 29 edition 3(May 1917)(Sheet 36 edition 6(February 1918).Scale is 1:40000. Both are printed on linen paper. One is annotated D.A.P.M. 29th Division. (I appreciate this the Provost Marshall Detachment) My question is.As there are no actual trenches marked on these maps are they strictly trench maps and if not what category do they fall under? Thank you in anticipatation
CROONAERT Posted 11 November , 2003 Share Posted 11 November , 2003 No, they're not "trench maps". Trench maps tend to be of the scale 1:5,000, 1:10,000, 1:20,000 and show trenches and/or other specific details. What you have are "Tactical maps".These are what the BEF went to war with in August 1914 (1:100,000 covering Belgium and 1:80,000 covering France). After the Battle of the Aisne, the 1:80,000 was enlarged to a 1:40,000 scale "Artillery Map". This was sometimes enlarged again to 1:20:000. Dave.
