auchonvillerssomme Posted 26 October , 2006 Share Posted 26 October , 2006 I see a few of these on my travels, sold as cordite containers, shell carriers. can anyone date and tell me context in which its used. Mick
TonyE Posted 26 October , 2006 Share Posted 26 October , 2006 I think that is one of the cylinders used to transport gun cotton and primers. These were generally "..made of tin, lacquered internally and painted black externally. The internal lacquering is to prevent rusting of the tin by the action of moisture which might be deposited from the guncotton at high temperatures. The lids are secured to the cylinders by bayonet joints...." From "Treatise on Ammunition 1915". Regards TonyE

auchonvillerssomme Posted 30 May , 2009 Author Share Posted 30 May , 2009 A couple of years ago i asked a question about cordite containers having seen a few. I now have one which is in excellent condition. Does anyone have a copy of any pictures where they are being used in context. Mick
