JohnBelcher Posted 22 October , 2006 Share Posted 22 October , 2006 I have just obtained my great grandfathers record of service (ADM/188/225). Unfortunatly all that I could get off the download was the list of ships / units he served on. Amongst the list is that from 1 April 1902 to 28 May 1903, he posted to Harwich. Also from 1903 - 1916 he is listed as being on Eastern - Kingsgate (3 times), Chatham , Skegness and Stockton Can anyone shed some light on what that was or what he might have been doing at those places? Many thanks in advance. John
horatio2 Posted 22 October , 2006 Share Posted 22 October , 2006 John, A bit more detail needed I think. Can you post his record or at least provide a verbatim transcript of the entries. What trade was he, seaman, stoker?? Service Number??

Kingsgate was definitely a Coastguard Station ( 2.5 m. E. of Margate Kent ). Regards John
JohnBelcher Posted 22 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2006 Many thanks for the replies horatio2 As I can't seem to put the attachment on here - this is the link to the download http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...88/225/0/42.pdf spithead You could well be right as the service record is closed off with "Transferred to Coastguard (NF) 1-5-1919 and if I remember correctly, his war medal is inscribed round the edge with Coastguard. Many thanks again for your help John
joseph Posted 22 October , 2006 Share Posted 22 October , 2006 John, John transferred to the coastguard as a Boatman on 01/04/1902, the transfer in 1919 is to the "New Force Coastguard" (they streamlined and stopped coastwatching) and he will have another set of records there, not too long though he went to pension in July 1920. He was a clever chap his job range is quite technical, electrical and wireless not bad at the turn of the century. Regards Charles
JohnBelcher Posted 22 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2006 Charles Thanks very much for that. As you say a clever chap. It seems that he retired as my Grandfather joined the RN. Now he had an interesting career.....steam submarines, the sub M2 with it's aircraft, Artic convoys, Malta convoys to name but a few. But that is another story. Thanks again for the help John
