Grovetown Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Is there anyway we can get a sticky at the top of this forum covering Lanyards, OS stripes and Good Conduct chevrons? The reason I ask is simply because these (same) questions get asked - or so it feels - 10 times a week; and the repitition of requests (IMHO) doesn't half clutter up this forum. Plus making it more of chore, and duller, to trawl through. Best wishes, Grovetown. PS/ Also add 'Brodies - first introduced' to the list above. I'll happily compile that one. PhilB Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Chevrons is Grumpy country. I defer to his judgement. I`d like his view on this, though. It`s the cover of Sharpe`s Fury and depicts the Battle of Barrosa. The British sergeant`s chevrons are inverted. Was that correct at that time? gporta Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Is there anyway we can get a sticky at the top of this forum covering Lanyards, OS stripes and Good Conduct chevrons? That would be a good idea... but then so many people asks questions which could be easily be answered in "the Long, Long trail" or by a previous search (in whose case the questions would be more in-depth)... we can always re-direct the question to an interesting previous thread (a newbie to the forum may be reasonably unaware of its rich archival material) Gloria
mark holden Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Perhaps a 'sticky' which says 'Have you searched before you asked?' Mark That would be a good idea... but then so many people asks questions which could be easily be answered in "the Long, Long trail" or by a previous search (in whose case the questions would be more in-depth)... we can always re-direct the question to an interesting previous thread (a newbie to the forum may be reasonably unaware of its rich archival material) Gloria
gporta Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 ... With links to "The Long, Long Trail" and the search facility Still, I think that many would post the question straight (it happened to me, too in the old times) Gloria
Graham Stewart Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Phil_B, I've gone through all of my references regarding rank chevrons from 1802, when they were introduced to 1825 and I can't find anything which points to ranks chevrons being inverted. All seem to be point down and can be found in a four, three, two one combination. Four being worn by the most senior of the senior ranks. However my reference do not include Guards, Emigre or scarlet clothed Dutch, Belgian troops. Graham.
chaz Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 I asked about a sticky before for another subject and was told no, they want people to use the search facility which obviously newcomers dont know how to. or probably feel its too impersonal. Muerrisch Posted 20 October , 2006 Share Posted 20 October , 2006 I don't know what a sticky is but I am content to leave things as they are: don't forget that these contacts are potentially useful to me as well! As for chevrons point up, I know of no instances but the army was rather under-supervised in these matters: an annual inspection by a general and his retinue was about all, and, in the Peninsula, one can scarcely believe even that. Dawany, the great expert, noted no instances of point-up in this era, and quotes GO 24 May 1803 as stipulating point down. Artist's licence? gnr.ktrha Posted 20 October , 2006 Share Posted 20 October , 2006 Hello, Maybe the answer is to have a more 'High brow' section of the forum for a more indepth responce to specific questions. You know, the stuff the avarage Family historian is not interested in. It's just a thought, but I should imagine, and you sometimes see it written , that because some questions and answers are indepth, many people feel a bit ''silly'' posting a basic question. It might infact be putting people off posting in the first place if they feel the forum is too indepth for them, ''elitist'' etc. Of course, others see it as a place to get a full answer to their questions. Just a few thoughts, but I know what you mean when you see endless questions about 'What's this badge?' etc, But I do really enjoy visiting this forum and having a good read, it is amazing all the different aspects that people are interested in and researching. What a great place. I love it Regards, Stewart
Grovetown Posted 20 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 20 October , 2006 I don't know what a sticky isGrumpy A 'Sticky' is a thread that is permanently pinned at the top of a (sub) forum. It's a constructive suggestion, consciously phrased not to have a go at those who are new/ don't search. It would still have the capacity to be replied to - so contacts can still be made. Such a Sticky could have the first four posts as the definitive statements on: 1. OS Stripes, 2. GC Chevrons, 3. Lanyards, 4. Brodies; as these are topics that come up time and time again, with the questions and replies containing a high degree of repitition. At the time of writing, there are four such 'stripe' threads on the first page... 'What's this cap badge' threads also occur with a high degree of frequency; but as the answers vary so much, I don't see what could be done to corrall them without fixing the entire Kipling & King on the board. Best wishes, Grovetown.
Muerrisch Posted 20 October , 2006 Share Posted 20 October , 2006 Grumpy A 'Sticky' is a thread that is permanently pinned at the top of a (sub) forum. Grovetown. Can you point me to an example please? I wouldn't mind doing the GC badge one I suppose.
ororkep Posted 20 October , 2006 Share Posted 20 October , 2006 Grumpy, Try out rootschat.com if I dare mention it, the majority of categories there have useful stickies at the head of them. Whatever, I personally would hate this forum to change too much, remember the cap badge question that might have been asked a hundred times previously, could be from the photo of a soldier/group/regiment someone has been after for years. Muerrisch Posted 20 October , 2006 Share Posted 20 October , 2006 Thanks. As I said earlier, these queries can also help the so-called expert.
