tenaj Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 My grandpa said he was sent to Germany post WW1 with the Army of Occupation; how can I confirm this? He never spoke about actually fighting in WW1 (he was born 1900). I've only his name and date of birth. Many thanks for any advice, Nanny Jan
Bernard_Lewis Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Need his name for starters plus info - if any - on which unit he may have said he served with. Bernard
tenaj Posted 19 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 19 October , 2006 His name John Frederick Bernard Howard born 9 July 1900. I have no info on his unit; very sorry. Nanny Jan
Bernard_Lewis Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 Not sure how to do this! Not my usual area. Try this link - it takes you (hopefully) to the National Archives website - medal index cards - I couldn't see an exact match for your relative. Others on this site, more expert than me, might be able to comment. Bernard http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Spec=score+desc
tenaj Posted 19 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 19 October , 2006 I'll see if I can find him there; thanks. Nanny Jan
Staffsyeoman Posted 19 October , 2006 Share Posted 19 October , 2006 The problem being that if he did not go overseas until 1919 and the Army of Occupation he wouldn't be eligible for medals and therefore no medal index card.
barrieduncan Posted 22 October , 2006 Share Posted 22 October , 2006 If he was still in the army post 1921, it's possible his service record can still be requested from the Army Personnel Centre. A google search should find an address, although I'm sure it's also on the Long Long Trail mother-site. Not guaranteed to get anything, but better exploring every option. tenaj Posted 23 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 23 October , 2006 Thanks Barrie but by 1921 he was back in England working repairing buses and married. I'm not sure when he joined the Army. Nanny Jan
