Hi all

A recent holiday in Jersy and when wandering round the church yard of St Brelade came across a couple of CWGC headstones, one was inscribed

29080 Private FA De La Cotte Dorsetshire Regiment 3rd April 1918,

I have looked at the CWGC site but cannot find him there and a search under cemetery dosn't throw up this cemetery either. ?

Curious to know what happened to him. If he is on anybodys research list I have a photo of the headstone.

A further CWGC stone was,

19463 Boy E.W. Windebank York & Lancaster Regiment 10th Feb 1919. Found him with no problem. He is from 3rd Btn

Spotted two further family stones

Howard Leopold Davis Somme 1916,

CWGC records him as Private Howard Leopold Davis 16199 " C " Company 17th Btn Highland Light Infantry who died age 21 on 12th August 1916. Parents from South Africa Buried at Etalpes Mititary Cemetery.

Edwin Nelson Lawford 1st South African Scottish Regiment April 9th Aged 26 @ Arras.

CWGC records him as Private EN Lawford 9251 4th Regiment South African Infantry who died on 9th April.

Buried Point-Du-Jour Military Cemetery Athies France.

This is a very old church yard and there may be others but time was limited.

If these are of interest to anybody I have photos.

If possibe can somebody do a SDGW look up please.

Rgards Chris

Thank you both,

Never thought to try alternatre spelling. What were troops doing on Jersey, Garrison duties or was a bospital located there ?

Chris

Looking at his name, it's a good bet he was from Jersey originally. It may be that he died of wounds, illness injury sustained abroad and was sent back to the UK for treatment but died. He was then buried where he was born, not an unusual occurance.
