An acquaintance has asked me to help him this rather spendlid looking gent who is called either Hercules or Hugh Ross. My first inkling is that he looks rather a Royal Marines Major, but I am as always open to suggestions.

John,

Are you sure it isn't a Police unit as he seems to be wearing a shoulder title "IP", so wondering if he was Indian Police, post WWI, and his rank would possibly indicate some sort of Commissioner. Infact I believe some places such as Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong had Indian Police units working alongside locally raised Police units, as they were regarded as more reliable and less open to corruption.

Interesting point, certainly having a had a good look the cap badge is not RMLI and does look more like a Police cap badge. That being the case he could be a Chief Superintendent or equivalent, I'm obliged for your reply, I wonder what that huge cross is though?

Gent's,

I took the liberty of posting the photograph on another Forum and it appears that the gentleman is Imperial(Indian) Police and possibly an Assistant District Superintendent wearing No.1 Dress.

Now the interesting part is the order worn around his neck and so far only one possible candidate seems to fit the bill and it's attached here. The order is called the Prussian Order of the Crown, which has even left these police experts wondering why he would be wearing such an order??

Any orders & medals experts out there who could possibly throw some light onto this one?

Graham.

  • 1 year later...

I have the seating plan for a dinner which took place at Government House Allahabad on November 2nd, 1920. The occasion for the dinner was the thirtieth anniversay of the arrival in India of the Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Harcourt Butler. The guests included two Generals, two Colonels and four Captains! But more than this, the remaining guests were judges of the High Court, both British and Indian. One Indian member was a negotiator beween Ghandi and the British Government. Not long after the dinner he became a member of the Privy Council. It was therefore an occasion of some weight; Mess Dress of course for the officers.

The guests further included a 'Mr Hercules Ross' and Mrs Ross.

The only mention of Hercules Ross on Google is the entry on the Forum.

He certainly looks impressive in the photograph. I hope this information is of interest and will ge glad of anything further which will help to explain his presence at the dinner.

I came across the seating plan by chance and am engaged in writing a short essay which I propose to publish through an internet print-on-demand site.
