sean finnis Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 Why can't I find this man on the 1901 Census? Ernest Frederick Whippie, born June 1892 qtr, Barton Regis - according to Free BDM. I'm trying to find his family details and address. Cheers folks, Duncan. Hi Duncan, Had a quick look at the 1901 census and the only Whippie family on it are living at 116 Gladstone rd, Wimbledon. I did notice 2 of the children, a Walter and a William were born in Bristol. No sign of a Ernest though. Bit pushed for time at mo, ill have a better look for you later! Best wishes, Sean. LindaSeaton Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 Duncan: Could this be your man? 1901 England Census Record Ernest F Whippis Name: Ernest F Whippis Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892 Relation: Son Father's name: William H Mother's name: Elizabeth A Gender: Male Where born: Bristol Civil Parish: Bristol Ecclesiastical parish: Bishopston St Michael and All Angels County/Island: Gloucestershire Country: England Registration district: Bristol Sub-registration district: Stapleton ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 102 Household Members: Name Age Elizabeth A Whippis 37 Ernest F Whippis 9 James R Whippis 12 William H Whippis 43 As all the census, the 1901 relies on people transcribing correctly, i have had awful trouble with my ancestors and the way people read and consequently spell them! I note that you said he was born in Barton Regis which is Gloucestershire, maybe it was easier to put Bristol down later which was in Gloucestershire? trin1054 Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 I know it says female, but is Earnest a girls name? Just checked the census image and it certainly looks like a transcription error. Earnest Whippey is MALE. Cheers, Marc
Duncan Posted 15 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 15 October , 2006 Thanks for looking everyone. I'm really confused now! Could be either man I suppose? Duncan
IanA Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 I'm afraid this is just typical of the 1901 transcription. Much appears to have been done, cheaply, by folks whose first language is not English. My grandfather was impossible to find until I narrowed down the address and searched house by house. 'Glendenning' was transcribed as 'Gluedining'. Good luck! Ian
Alison Arnold Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 I know it says female, but is Earnest a girls name? My grandfather is on the 1901 census as a female and his name was Percy. As said previously its a transcription error. Ali
Duncan Posted 16 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 16 October , 2006 Duncan: Could this be your man? 1901 England Census Record Ernest F Whippis Name: Ernest F Whippis Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892 Thinking about it I think this must be the man, possibly the 'e' in Whippie mistaken for an 's'? Is there an address at all? Thanks for your help. Duncan.
linge Posted 16 October , 2006 Share Posted 16 October , 2006 Duncan The address is Glenwood, Ashley Down Road, Bristol. The father is a solicitors clerk. From the 1901 Census sheet it could be Whippie or Whippis the last letter stradles a dividing line. The same family at the time of the 1891 Census were in the Barton Regis RD (Overend Villa, Ashley Park, Chesterfield Road, Bristol) and at that time the name definitely was Whippie. Looking at the birth and marriage registrations I believe the family to be: Parents: William Herman Whippie and Elizabeth Alexandria Pritchard married in the Jun Qtr 1887 in the Keynsham RD. Brother: James Reginald Whippie birth registered in the Jun Qtr 1888 in the Barton Regis RD. Regards Pam
