subski Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Last minute decission to go to Ypres for Rememberance Day, a couple of points, 1) any idea where we can stay (three of us, two adults and one child), or have we left it too late. 2) sorry for the ignorance, but is the Official Rememberance Day on the 11th Saturday or on the Sunday 12th November Mick and Tina
Tom Morgan Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Mick and Tina - there is no Remembrance Sunday in France and Belgium - the big day is always November 11th itself. All the special parades take place on that day and the Last Post ceremony takes place twice - at 11.00 and at 20.00. It's quite an experience, but very, very crowded. For that reason you ought to start looking for available accommodation right way. Have a good trip - Tom

Evening entertainment in the square and sweets for the kids. I had to give up me room this year (Sob) owing to my wife not being able to do everything. We will be there next week though and have booked my room for next year. If you go to my website - www.ypressalient.co.uk = war diaries - Nov 2005 - should give you an idea. Go to www.ariane.be - they may have a last minute cancellation (as I had to cancel!) Also www.ieper.be for other hotels/guest houses. Both linked from my website - under- other great war info- website links. Hope you get there and enjoy. stevem

j.r.f Posted 15 October , 2006 Share Posted 15 October , 2006 MICK & TINA Give the tourists office a ring they are most helpfull. Also ask them to reserve for you tickets for the concert in the cathedral on the 11th I will be there with the Devon Fire and Rescue Service bag pipe band. The cost is 12 euros per ticket. The number to ring, from England, is 0032 57239 220.This is a very moving commemoration of the FIRST WORLD WAR.The combined pipes and bands playing HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL will make the hairs on the back of your head stand up.I cannot recamend this enough.Get to the Cathedrtal early as there are always lots of people waiting to go in.The MENIN GATE is very crowded on the 11th ,but is also a very moving event.Again get there early. In the daytime keep your eyes open for St Nicholas.Sometimes on a white horse, real, giving sweets out to the children. YPRES,LEPER, is an incredible place,I do not think it can fail to interest the children. If you see a fat bloke with beard glasses and a walking stick,it might be me,just come up to me and say YPRES is the prize and you must be JOHN FLOOK,If you are lucky it might be me,but if not you will get into an interesting conversation with somebody else. ENJOY THE VISIT IT IS TO BE TREATED WITH REVERENCE BUT ALSO VERY MUCH TO BE TREASURED AND ENJOYED. I hope to see you & yours there, CHEERS. JOHN.
