Tom Morgan Posted 13 October , 2006 Share Posted 13 October , 2006 In Paisley Abbey on the Roll of Honour there are five women who died 'P P Hut, Calais' They were the only women on the list who were not named as Nurses or Sisters. Does anyone have any idea what PP Hut Calais was? and what happened there to kill five women (with mostly Scottish surnames). Tom
eltoro1960 Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Is there a possibility that it is BP rather than PP, the reason I ask is Baden Powell the Chief Scout of the Scout Association built a series of Scout Huts in France, including on in Calais. It was staffed by Scout Masters beyond service age or infirm and a large number of ladies.I know for a fact that the one in Calais was bombed on more than one occasion (5 soldiers killed), was set on fire by accident. Here is a picture of the 'Mercers Arms' in Calais the Merecrs Company was a London Trade Guild that Baden Powell was a member of. Hope this is of assistance. Tom Morgan Posted 14 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2006 That's an interesting thought, John. Even if it wasn't exactly that (BP hut instead of PP hut) it must certainly have been something like it. Thanks for that. Tom
Sue Light Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Tom Can you work the date out from their names? Sue
Tom Morgan Posted 14 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Sue I don't have the names, I'm afraid. The initial question came to me in an email from a customer. If you have an interest in who these ladies were and what they were doing there let me know, and I'll ask if the customer has a note of the names. Sue Light Posted 14 October , 2006 Share Posted 14 October , 2006 Although they're not nurses, I just wondered if I could work out for you what had happened from the Matron-in-Chief's war diary - it's quite detailed sometimes, especially with things happening at the Channel Ports. Tom Morgan Posted 14 October , 2006 Author Share Posted 14 October , 2006 OK Sue - that would be very interesting if you could do it. I'll see if I can find out the names. Tom
