Scottish help needed

Hope that one of the Scottish PAL’s is able to assist and point me in the right direction.

I’m researching Fremantle soldiers in World War One, and in 1915 a Donald Macauley, originally from Scotland, was living with his Uncle in North Fremantle where he worked as a labourer.

In 1915 he enlisted and was assigned to the new 44th Battalion AIF which was forming at Claremont Showground in Western Australia.

He was given the service number 599 and served with the Battalion from when they arrived in France from Dec 1916.

Through the war he was wounded a couple of times and was also awarded the DCM & MM for his actions in 1918 and had made the rank of Company Sergeant Major.

His last time in the line was the 30th of August 1918 when he was badly wounded in the arm. He was sent back to hospital in England where he had his arm amputated.

Instead of coming back to Australia he took his discharge in England in November 1918 and went to live back with his parents at Stornoway Scotland.

His mum’s address was 43 South Braga Stornoway

I’m hoping to find out what happened to him after that and if there are any relatives still in that area.

Do any of the PALS know of a local history society in Stornoway or even a local paper? I tried one link for a paper that I found on Google but it kept coming up with an error message.

Andrew, this link for the Stornoway History Society works for me: clickity click

Hopefully they'll be able to help you. It's a smallish town, so surely someone will know something!

Edit Wow, what an amazing looking war memorial they have!

It is indeed an impressive sight especially in the evening sunset. When you consider what %of the population lost their lives it really was a case of the lost generation.

Thanks for the extra info Mike.

I did get in touch with the Stornoway Local History society after Allie's message. They put me in touch with Donald's descendants.

Hi Andrew Donald Macaulay was my grandfather and I am lucky enough to have the honour of being the holder of his medals. If you are still interested I could help you fill in the gaps.
