I got the medal roll through to Private R.43249, 11th Notts & Derby Regiment. Then he went on to serve in the 10th, 14th, 15th, and back to the 10th Royal Irish Rifles. Any idea why so many changes? The other men on the medal roll also had these changes to.

There is a bit of info on this link:

http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/045SherF.htm

the site is under construction but there are a few refs to follow.

Also I found War Diaries at the National Archives at Kew:

11th Battalion Aug 1915-Oct 1917 WO95/2187

10th Battalion Jul 1915-Mar 1919 WO95/2008

14th couldn't find one

15th Battalion Jan 1916-Apr 1919 WO95/2488

Best wishes

Hi there

Usual reasons for moving on are wounds or illness. When convalesence was complete, men were posted to where they were needed. If for instance your man in the 11th Sherwoods was quite badly wounded on the Somme, brought back to a hospital in UK, took a while to be declared fit, and could then have been transferred to the RIR either in UK, or from reinforcements in France/Belgium. The 11th Sherwoods had numerous drafts after the Somme to fill gaps in their ranks, and by the time your man was fit, he could have been surplus to requirements. Could have for instance contracted trench foot in his new battalion, sent home again, went to a different battalion, this time with the same regiment (RIR).

And one of his final moves could well have been connected with disbanded battalions, both 10th and 14th RIR were disbanded on 18/02/1918.

I'd be interested to know the id of any 11th N&D personnel. I think Anthony Bagshaw would too.
