Looking for info for 1st Bn Lincolnshire’s. My uncle "Henry Edward Atkinson" d.o.w as a POW on the 12 June 1915. Reportedly in the German field hospital at Geluveld. I am trying to piece together the action that saw him captured and wounded. I’m guessing that it was probably the night of the 2/3 June.

As he was only an acting L/Cpl I can’t find out what Coy he was in. I've been to the Lincolnshire life museum and I remember a book that I think was written by one of the men who served in the Lincs at that time, or I could be going mad. Any help from those in the know would be very appreciated.

Hello,

There is some general stuff on the parent site that you may already have seen.

http://www.1914-1918.net/lincolns.htm

http://www.1914-1918.net/3div.htm

http://www.1914-1918.net/bat12.htm#hoo

The battalion war diary for that period is

WO 95/1429 1 Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment 1914 Aug. - 1915 Oct.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...;accessmethod=0

You'd obviously need to go to the National Archives to see it.

Simpson's History of the Lincolnshire Regt gives this for the end of May start of Jun 1915 for 1st Lincs:

The Battalion had a tour in the trenches, where there was a good deal of fighting, in the neighbourhood of Hooge and Zouave Wood, between 1st & 5th June. The Lincolnshire were in support of the 6th Cavalry Briagde. their casualities were Lt JW Harris and 10 other ranks killed, and 2nd Lt TR Hammond, 91 other ranks wounded and nineteen missing. On the 5th June the battalion was withdrawn to Brandhoek, 4 miles west of Ypres....

Museum of Lincolnshire Life should have a copy of the 1st's war diary which should flesh out the above account.

Was Henry an original member of the battalion?

Jim

Yes, Henry was in the original bunch that left from Portsmouth and fought at Mons.

My Father used to tell of the time when he, his mother and sisters went down to see Henry parade, in his best kit, through Portsmouth. Must have been before they left for France
