jim_davies Posted 10 October , 2006 Share Posted 10 October , 2006 Trying to figure out when the first reinforcements would have reached the battalions of the 11th (Northern) Division, especially the 6th Lincs. From Westlake I have these dates: 9th West Yorks-19th Sept 1915 6th East Yorks-13th Aug 1915 (from Imbros-so presumably were part of the main unit that left England 30 Jun 1915 6th Yorks-8th Sept 1915 6th Lincolns-?-23rd Sept 1915, no longer part of composite battalion 6th Borders- as 6th Lincs 7th S Staffs-? 21st Sept 1915, no longer part of composite battalion 9th Sherwoods- as 7th S Staffs 8th Northumberland Fus-? 9th lancs Fus-1st Oct 1915, no longer part of composite battalion 8th West Riding-? 5th Dorsets-1st draft 9th Sept 1915, 2nd draft-15th Sept 1915 11th Mancesters-23rd Sept 1915-no longer part of composite battalion From the above it looks like (except the E Yorks) that reinforcements started to appear in Sept, but hoped that someone might be able to flesh in soem detail. The question is further muddled by looking at the entry dates for men (MIC or 1914-5 rolls) for example from the 6th Lincs, "original battalion" men entry dates: 1st Jul-date batt sailed from England 18th Jul-date batt arrived at Mudros With both the date of leaving England and arriving "in theatre" being used I'm having difficulty working out the arrival dates of later men to the battalion, ie with a entry date of 28 Aug 1915, is this when they left the UK or arrived??? Hope the above makes some sort of sense... Jim
Greenwoodman Posted 11 October , 2006 Share Posted 11 October , 2006 This taken from the History of the 7th South Staffords:- "On September 2nd, a large draft of officers and men arrived from England for the 11th Division; amongst these were Capt. G. Williams and 2nd-Lieut. A. H. Ashcroft, who were not, however, posted to the Staffords till September 14th." The History also records reinforcements arriving from Imbros between 14th and 18th August 1915. My grandfather's theatre date is recorded on his MIC as 20th September 1915. joseph Posted 11 October , 2006 Share Posted 11 October , 2006 Jim, "6th East Yorks-13th Aug 1915 (from Imbros-so presumably were part of the main unit that left England 30 Jun 1915" These men as you say where already members of the 6th EYR, the first Draft of reinforcements (100) arrived in the lines and distributed to companys on the 7th Sep 1915 bringing the strength of each company to 120.
