Trench map ref 57d.V.26.b.2.2

I hope this is the correct forum for this query.

My great uncle is buried in Ribemont Communal Cemetery extension, and his memorial plaque says he died in Henencourt Wood. His entry in SDGW says he died of wounds. I have contacted CWGC and they have told me that he was moved to Ribemont in August 1919 from map ref 57d.V.26.b.2.2, which is near Henencourt.

He died on June 1st 1918, serving with 'O' battery, 9th brigade, RHA. I've accessed the war diary, but found no record of casualties on June 1st (closest is May 21 6 OR wounded - perhaps one of them was my great uncle)

My question is - does anyone know where I can look at this trench map? My interepretation of maps available on the IWM CD is that it does not cover this reference (which I assume translates to 57d SW 3 or 4).

Any ideas? Would it be at TNA?

Thanks,

Ruth

Worth trying this website, owned by one of our members, "Croonaert"

Dave has quite a collection of maps and you may strike lucky.

Hi John

Thanks for the suggestion - I've looked at the site which doens't have it as one of the 'extracts', but I've written to them to enquire if it's in their collection

Thanks for alerting me to this useful website!

Ruth, I have poor quality b/w 20,000 map showing this, will post if nothing better turns up, Peter.

Thanks Peter - I may well be in touch with a request in a week or so's time; I'll see whether I make any headway elsewhere in the interim

I'll look on my Trench Maps CD tonight and post a screenshot if I can find the wood.

Mebu

Thank you very much for posting this - helps to pinpoint exactly where it was. I shall now try to find out about field ambulances / advanced dressing stations in the vicinity via my original post under 'soldiers'.

Great stuff!

I wish I had read this earlier as I was in Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension only last weekend.

Had i done so I would have been happy to take photos and pay my respects. I have a couple of general shots of the cemetery if they are of interest.

I take it from the reference to henencourt that we are talking about Ribemont-sur-l'Ancre and not the cemetery of the same name on the Aisne.

Hi Mike

What a shame - I was there a couple of months ago and my sister and I left pebbles on the gravestone (a Jewish tradition) I'd love to have known if they were still there!

I'd be interested in your general shots in case I can spot the grave - it's right at the front on the end of the first row.

I'll PM you my email address

Thanks again

Hi Andy

Many thanks - can't spot Harry, but it's a great shot of the cemetery and will be a welcome addition to my set of photos.

Ruth

Thank you Ruth

Glad I could do my little bit
